How does a pedometer work in smartwatches and smartphones

The first pedometers were entirely mechanical and functioned like a pendulum. Now they have been completely replaced by electronics. So, in the latest generation of smartphones, there are complex sensors, like an accelerometer, that work in the background. They track movement throughout the day, and that data is fed to apps, where it’s converted into step counts.

Similarly, accelerometers work in sports watches. Sleep quality is monitored by the same sensor, as it captures how much you toss and turn while you sleep. Modern fitness bracelets work on a three-component accelerometer, which allows you to measure acceleration along three axes – the beginning and end of movement and its intensity.

How to count steps?

Steps are counted using a wide range of devices:

  • special step counters.

The easiest solution is to download a step counter app on your phone. Most programs work using the built-in GPS, and therefore many of these activity trackers will also be able to track distance traveled, movement speed, and calories burned.

But remember that energy tracking apps are less accurate than fitness bands and sports watches, especially if they don’t know your heart rate.

Special pedometers

These individual devices are considered the most accurate for counting steps. Less precision, of course, in smartphones.

Clip the pedometer to your belt, set the step count to zero, and walk 100 steps while counting them yourself. When you walk 100 steps, the device should display the same number plus or minus five.

Pedometers are very small, they attach to the leg, belt or wrist and most of them only indicate the number of steps. Their price is appropriate and starts from 250 rubles.

With the same success, a beautiful application in a smartphone will calculate steps. Some programs use your phone’s accelerometers. Others use GPS satellite navigation to determine the distance you have walked or run while receiving signals from space satellites.
