Often gardeners can hear that there are female and male strawberry bushes. A neighbor in the country constantly talks about how she mercilessly kidnaps “boys”. In this article we will try to figure out what this division is based on, whether it is correct and why distinguish strawberries.

Male and female strawberries

If you delve into botany, you may come to the conclusion that the generally accepted division is not quite correct. In fact, there are no female or male strawberries. This plant is bisexual – in one flower there are both pistils and stamens.

However, it needs cross pollination. Despite the fact that there are no bushes-boys or bushes-girls, the properties of some “individuals” are still different. The fact is that some are able to produce berries, others are able to pollinate neighboring plants with the help of insects. There are reasons for this.

  1. Deviations in the development of bushes. As a result, some plants develop according to the female or male type. It doesn’t happen very often.
  2. pollution of plantations. There are varieties that are difficult to distinguish from fruit varieties. However, they mostly give whiskers. It is these scoundrels who need to be removed from the garden so that they do not crowd out decent and productive bushes.

These are weedy bushes that gardeners mistakenly call “male”. Such bushes appear under certain conditions. If a ripe berry falls or is missing during the harvesting process, seeds will drop from it and germinate. The germinated seeds then undergo a “Mendelian splitting”, and bushes with different properties appear.

The thing is, strawberries are an artificially grown plant. It has no wild analogues: it is a hybrid not even of varieties, but of species. It’s no surprise that something strange can come out of germinating seeds.

Why are weed bushes dangerous? First, they inherit the properties of a long-forgotten species and productivity is not one of those properties. Secondly, if you let them multiply and expel good fruit-bearing bushes, a bed of strawberries will not yield a juicy harvest, but only small, unsweetened berries. There are forms of weed that do not produce berries at all.

To avoid loss of yield, the beds should be regularly cleaned of unnecessary bushes. The procedure is quite simple.

  1. We find a weed bush.
  2. We remove it along with the mustache and roots. We do this carefully, twisting the plant so as not to damage neighboring bushes.
  3. The pits that formed in the place of the removed bushes are covered with earth.

How to calculate barren bushes

  1. In the spring, you need to pay attention to the number of peduncles formed on each bush. Those with the most flower stalks promise a harvest. They should be marked with stakes and leave 1-2 whiskers to maintain the number of good bushes.
  2. Bushes that do not have flower stalks and a lot of mustaches are removed from the garden. So we will remove Zhmurka and Dubnyak – the main weeds.
  3. When the berries begin to ripen, we closely monitor their development. If the fruits are small and tasteless, the leaves are thin and dull, and the bush itself is too sprawling, then most likely it is Bakhmutka. She is also an unwelcome guest on the plantation.

  4. Dark red fruits with deeply planted seeds, numerous rosettes and shoots are characteristic of the Suspension variety. It is also better to delete them.
  5. In short, it’s worth removing anything that doesn’t look like the variety we bought and planted.
  6. This is very important: it is better not to leave rotten, spoiled or overripe fruits in the garden, but to throw them away.

This is in fact the whole point of the division into female and male strawberries. In order for the harvest to please, when it comes to growing large strawberries, you just need to calculate the barren bushes in time and get rid of them. Thus you will leave room for fruit plants.
