Description of hybrid tea rose variety Desiree
The Desiree hybrid tea rose was bred in 2004 by American breeder John Clements. The culture of this variety is resistant to diseases, unpretentious in care and can bloom again.
A hybrid tea shrub of small stature – about 1 m in height, with dark green, glossy foliage. The leaves are medium with serrated edges. Greenery grows well, the bush itself looks neat with straight vertical peduncles.
The bud is formed only on the shoots. The loose-shaped flower is large, with a diameter of 8-12 cm, medium-double with up to 25 petals. The color closer to the peduncle is more saturated and dark, and towards the edges of the petal it turns pale pink. Petals with wavy edges, well set.
Warning! A feature of the Desire hybrid tea rose is that a brush is not formed on the shoot, but a single bud.
The Desire hybrid tea variety is early flowering, the first flowering can be expected in late May or early July, depending on the growing region. Flowering is abundant until mid-summer, after which the bush loses its inflorescences and blooms again in mid-August.

Seedling selection rules
Planting a hybrid Desire tea rose in your garden requires consideration not only of site preparation, but also of the right choice of planting material. A Désirée hybrid tea rose seedling must have a certain number of characteristics which must be taken into account in order not to make the wrong choice:
- age – at least 1 year;
- root neck about 10 mm in diameter, at least 8 mm is allowed;
- total absence of leaves.
When choosing a rose seedling, you need to:
- Inspect the root system, it should be well developed with branches.
- Pay attention to the number of stems. It is preferable that there are more than two. At the same time, they must be strong enough, with a diameter of at least 6 cm and a green color.
- Check the kidneys, they should be at rest.
Advice! You should not take a seedling that has too long or pale shoots, most likely the plant is sick.
First of all, before planting a Désirée hybrid tea rose, you have to choose the right place. This garden plant is very demanding on the landing site. It should be bright and sunny, but well protected from the wind. It is undesirable to plant a Desiree rose near raspberries, cherries, mountain ash, pears. The plant is undemanding to the composition of the soil, but grows more successfully on nutritious loose soil.
A pit for planting a seedling should be prepared in advance. It should be at least 60 cm deep and about 50 cm in diameter. If you plan to plant several hybrid tea roses, be sure to keep a distance of 1 m between them.
A drainage layer of 20 cm is laid out at the bottom of the pit, then a layer of soil excavated from the pit is laid out, it is pre-mixed with humus, river sand, mineral complex additives and wood ash. This mixture is spread over 1/3 of the volume of the pit.
After that, the seedling is placed in a hole, its roots are distributed along the bottom and covered with soil, slightly tamping. After planting, the seedling is watered abundantly. The root circle should also be mulched.
Features of caring for a Desiree rose
After planting, in order for the seedling of Desire’s hybrid tea rose to take root and begin to develop well, you need to properly care for it. Timely watering, top dressing, pruning, as well as protection from diseases and pests will contribute to growth and abundant flowering.
It is necessary to periodically water the Desiree rose, but it is important not to over-moisten it. Watering is carried out in warm weather about 1 time per week, in spring-autumn, between waterings you can endure up to 2 weeks. The main watering signal is dried topsoil.
Desiree hybrid tea rose requires timely top dressing, which directly affects flowering.
With good fertilization of the soil at the time of planting, in the first year the rose does not need to be fed. The first dressing should be done in the spring after pruning the roses. To do this, it is necessary to use mineral fertilizers, which are scattered after watering around the bush, stepping back 11 cm from the trunk of the bush. Cover with soil and water again thoroughly. Repeat this procedure in a week. So, the bush should be fertilized with 5 liters of rotten mullein, mixing it with the ground and watering.
The second top dressing is necessary at the time of the appearance of buds. In this case, mineral and organic fertilizers are applied together. At the time of flowering roses do not need fertilizers. But the last top dressing is done after the withering of the rose. It is better to use only organic fertilizers, the mineral complex should be applied when the bush shows signs of illness or lethargy.
Cut and shape
Obligatory in the care of the Desiree hybrid tea rose is its timely pruning. It can be of several types, which depend on the season and the strength of the pruning:
- Weak – carried out in the spring. Cut only the frozen tops of the shoots. At the same time, the rose begins to bloom earlier and more abundantly, but the flowers are smaller.
- strong – cut more than half of the shoot, leaving only a few buds. In this case, the bush will begin to bloom later and in smaller quantities, but the flowers will be large.
- Summer – pruning after flowering. Thanks to the cutting of the old inflorescence with a small part of the shoot, the subsequent flowering will be more abundant.
- spring – something similar to a plus size. Shoots are also cut in half, leaving only 3-4 buds. It is highly undesirable to miss it.
- fall – pre-winter pruning. In this case, only damaged and unripe buds are cut off. It should not be pruned too much so that the plant can recover before the onset of frost.
Protection against diseases and pests
Tea rose hybrid Desiree has good immunity to fungal diseases, but measures still need to be taken against pests.
The rose can be externally damaged by insects such as:
- spider mite;
If damage appears on the leaves and buds, they must be immediately removed and the plant treated with special chemicals.
If no damage was found on the leaves, but the bush begins to fade, its growth is slowed down, it is possible that the roots of the rose are damaged by a nematode. In this case, simple external treatment will not help. To do this, the bush is dug up, its roots are washed and treated with a special chemical solution. After the rose is transplanted to a new place.
Rosa Désirée in landscaping
The Desiree hybrid tea rose is widely used in landscaping. It can be used as a unique decoration of the site and as a compositional addition.
Compositions called mixborders are especially popular, where the rose acts as the main crop and other flowers create a decorative background. The most suitable for creating such a composition are:
- flowers with inflorescences stretched upwards: bellflower, hydrangea, sage, aconite;
- plants with small and variegated buds: burnet, cornflower, ptarmika yarrow;
- with elongated flowers: clematis, Asiatic and curly lilies.
The most successful places for planting Desire roses are areas near the path and along the walls.
The Desiree hybrid tea rose is an unusually beautiful garden plant that pleases with its delicate flowers for a long time. This variety is considered especially suitable for cutting, but it also successfully decorates the landscape design of the garden plot.
Desiree hybrid tea rose reviews
Alena, 32 years old, Barnaul
I bought a Désirée rose, knowing nothing about the variety, but I did not regret my choice. The plant turned out unpretentious, blooms beautifully with pale pink flowers. Has a light delicate aroma. The flowers are large and velvety. It is especially pleasant that precipitation does not affect the quality of the rose, it remains equally beautiful even after heavy rains.

When choosing a rose for my summer cottage, I reviewed many different varieties. I decided to go for the Désirée hybrid tea rose. What interested me most was that the bush was unpretentious and resistant to various climatic conditions. For me it is very important, because I rarely go to the country house, so I do not have time to take great care of flowers.
