Did you know? It turns out that strawberry sockets are conditionally divided into “male” and “female”. And, if it is very short, the female bushes are more likely to bear fruit and give more crops, but they give less whiskers. And men are just the opposite., they reproduce well, but there are much fewer berries on them. True, it is also not recommended to abuse this state of affairs, because “males” play an important role – they pollinate female sockets, so you can not do without them either. But when it comes to how to get a big harvest of strawberries, this fact will help us.

Spring, of course, is not the best time for planting strawberries, it is better to do this matter on the eve of autumn, somewhere in August. However, young rosettes can also be planted in May, especially since strawberry plants are now in abundance in nurseries and garden markets. Of course, today you will not pick berries from it, but next year you will have a healthy young strawberry at your disposal.

Well, the more pressing question is how to distinguish between “male” and “female” plugs?

At first glance, they look alike, however, there are still differences, even if there are only three or four leaves in a young rosette. Take a closer look:

1. The most important thing where you need to “see” is in the heart of the rosette, that is, where the leaves grow from. In males it is smaller and elongated in shape, in females it is somewhat larger and flattened, resembling a small ball.

2. Male species often look “smarter” than females: they have large fleshy shiny leaves, often there are more petioles.

3. Adult bushes stand out even during the flowering period: there are a lot of flowers on the males, but after they wither you will not find ovaries. Such a phenomenon is commonly called “empty flower”.

4. In nurseries specializing in the sale of different varieties of strawberries, you can find a “bisexual” (there are, it turns out, such!) A species that bears excellent fruit from year to year. Experienced sellers will certainly tell you about the features of these berries, and you will know how to increase the yield of strawberries.
