May is in the yard, which means gardening work is in full swing. Hard-working summer residents will in a few months harvest the first fruits from gardens and flower beds. In this article, we will tell you how to plant zucchini and properly care for the plants so that the harvest exceeds all expectations.

How to plant zucchini in the ground

There are two ways to plant zucchini: seeds and seedlings. The first method is suitable if the climate allows planting directly into the ground or there is simply no place for seedlings. Zucchini is best sown in the ground in late May or early June. Don’t wait for the heat, but don’t rush either. Frosts can harm the plant.

Before sowing, prepare the soil: make holes 70 cm apart, put compost or humus in them. Then you can sow the seeds. The optimal soil for growing zucchini is light sandy and loamy soil. In addition, zucchini love light and heat, so they should be sown on the sunny side. The lighter the plant has, the faster it will please with a generous harvest.

Some summer residents prefer to grow seedlings first. To do this, pour a mixture of peat and humus into small pots or cups, water a little and lay out the seeds. We sprinkle them with a layer of soil mixture about 2-3 cm thick and water the seedlings every 10 days. During the whole time, we carry out two top dressings. The first when shoots appear, the second – after 10 days. Seedlings are sown 30-35 days before planting in open ground.

Outdoor zucchini maintenance

The bed on which zucchini is grown should be loose. It is important that the soil is well permeable to water. Some types of soil tend to harden – a crust forms on the surface. It is recommended to loosen this floor more often.

Zucchini needs regular, but not too frequent watering. Once every 10 days will suffice. For 1 m² you will need about 10 liters of water. By the way, the correct water temperature for irrigation is very important. Water that is too cold can lead to the rotting of the ovary. If about 10 days remain before harvest, watering should be stopped.

Mullein or special fertilizers are used to feed zucchini. It is necessary to carry out top dressing at least 2 times: during the flowering period and during the development of the fruit. This will increase productivity. It is also recommended to spread the leaves during flowering for better pollination of zucchini. This should provide better insect access to the flowers.

The most productive varieties of zucchini are Tsukesha, Pharaoh, Aeronaut, Beloplodny, Chaklun, Kavli, Iskander. By the way, we recommend that you read the article about the benefits of zucchini. It is a really useful product that can be used by almost anyone.
